Tells Bulosan American promise of equality for all is unfinished, ongoing process.

[Second oldest brother. Honorably discharged from Phillipine Scouts at 20, diagnosed with TB. Returns home, influences Bulosan by showing him beauty is intrinsically valuable. Shows Carlos how to snare birds without harming them (find beauty amidst suffering despair). Teaches Carlos to appreciate beauty in more dire and depressing moments of his life. Becomes mayor of Binalonan. Dies of TB.],

Oldest brother. Just returns from fighting in war. Lives traditional peasant lifestyle. Moves with wife to another part of Luzon. Teaches Carlos to appreciate Earth and all it offers, symbol of bittersweet nature of homecoming.

Illiterate, but understands important role education plays in achieving a better life. Forced to sell land to pay for education, loss of land turns him into idle alcoholic, destitute.
